Hair Care

There are several practical ways to cope with the fragile hair condition that can be caused by chemotherapy. Here some hair care tips for patients undergoing scalp cooling and chemotherapy treatments:

•  Wherever possible, let your hair dry naturally, as hairdryers can further damage brittle hair.

• Use only gentle hair products, such as mild, pH-balanced or baby shampoo, to prevent dryness of the hair and scalp.

• Use conditioner or leave-in conditioning spray to moisturise the hair and scalp.

• Avoid washing your hair everyday. Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner every 4–7 days.

• Rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry and let it dry naturally or use a soft towel.

• Use a soft-bristled hairbrush or wide-toothed comb to prevent irritating your scalp if it is tender. Comb gently and avoid excessive brushing and combing.

• Use a satin pillow-case to minimize friction when lying down. Use cotton as an alternative.

• Do not perm your hair for at least six months after your treatment. If your scalp does become too dry you can gently massage it with a light moisturizer.

• Avoid hair manipulations such as hair rollers and curling irons.

• Avoid plaiting your hair, wearing hair clips or wearing it in a tight band, as this can damage and break your hair.

•  If you need to dye your hair, use only tints or hair dyes made of natural colorants.

• A poor diet, stress and alcohol can make the condition of your hair worse. It is important to eat as well as you can (with plenty of fruit and vegetables), drink alcohol in moderation and avoid stress, if possible, to keep your hair in good condition.
