The cooling cap

The DigniCap™ system provides an inner cooling cap in silicon and an outer insulating cap made in neoprene.

There are four sizes for the inner silicon caps and outer neoprene caps to ensure the right fitting for individual patient. The cap sizes are: Extra Small XS (Red), Small S (Blue), Medium M (Green) and Large L (Grey)

The scalp is cooled by circulating a liquid coolant through labyrinth-like channels in the intricately molded cooling cap. The cap is made of silicon and has a smooth inner surface to allow a snug fit and optimal contact between cap and scalp at the desired operative temperature, typically +5°C (41°F). The temperature is reached during a gentle pre-cooling phase starting at room temperature. This gradual cooling makes the treatment more comfortable for the patient. The cooling is required before, during and after the infusion of the chemotherapy, depending on the particular chemotherapy drug and dosage.

As the forehead is typically warmer than the back of the head, the silicon cap is equipped with two separate cooling channels carrying separate temperature sensors, one for the forehead and one for the back of the head. The sensors continually measure the scalp temperature and adjust the cooling effect so that a constant temperature is achieved in the scalp.

An additional security sensor on the cap ensures that the scalp temperature never falls below 0°C (32°F). To ensure optimal fit and treatment temperature, an insulating outer cap made of neoprene is placed around the inner silicon cap. Both the inner and outer caps are lightweight (about 250 grams in total) and form a good seal. The ears are not covered, which allows the patient, for example, to listen to music or talk to the medical staff.

The connections to the cooling cap are easy to connect and disconnect with snap connections. The cap can be retained, for example, during visits to the toilet. The insulating outer cap in neoprene ensures that the temperature is maintained.
