Types of scalp cooling

There are various types of scalp cooling methods ranging from simple cold packs to advanced cooling systems, but the effect varies strongly. A common method is the use of gel-filled cap which is chilled at a temperature of –24°C (75°C). This method requires proper fitting and frequent cap changes due to thawing and is very labor-intensive for the nursing staff. It can also be very uncomfortable for patients due to the extremely cold initial temperature and the heavy weight of the cap.

Lately, a new generation type of caps use small refrigerated cooling machines to pump an air or liquid coolant through a cap. Though no cap change is needed here, it is difficult to gauge how much coolant is needed to circulate round the scalp to provide consistent cooling. Inconsistent cooling and loosely fitted caps can lead to patchy hair loss. Other factors include the individual condition of patients, types of drugs used, drug dose.

For optimal results, scalp cooling should involve a properly fitted cap with controlled cooling which can maintain a consistent temperature of the scalp during the entire treatment. The system should also be easy to use and gentle on patients. These key criteria are effectively enforced in DigniCap™ – a unique scalp cooling system which consists of a tight-fitting cooling cap with built-in temperature sensors connected to an integrated cooling and monitor unit. Since its introduction in 2001, DigniCap™ has been used on more than 4000 patients and has been clinically proven to help more than 85 percent of patients retain their hair
